The most ancient document of America is a Maya Codex

American scientists verified the authenticity of the Grolier Codex

Researchers from Brown University have unveiled one of the most mysterious items of modern archeology; they proved the authenticity of the Grolier Codex, the fourth Maya document discovered and the most ancient manuscript of the American continent.

This codex –which has been dated to the 13th century- is a 10 pages fragment associated with sacrifice rituals and includes a calendar of the movements of the ‘morning star’, Venus.

An investigation published in the magazine ‘Arqueología Maya’ (Mayan Archeology) says that “it was a guide for priests to practice divination; it also explains the everyday rituals and the right moment for war”.

But why did the archeologists doubt its authenticity?

The codex, along with other prehispanic objects, were found on a cave in Chiapas in 1965, later on it was sold to Josue Saenz, a collector who, in 1971, exposed the document at the Grolier, a private club in New York.

In fact, of the six items found by the looters in Chiapas, the codex is the only one that had not been recognized as authentic.

It became a kind of dogma to assume it was a falsification”, told to El Pais, Sthepen Houston, director of Early Cultures at Brown University.

Nevertheless, the radiocarbon dating states that the amate (bark paper), from which the codex is made of, was produced in 1230. Researchers also point out that it would have been virtually impossible for a forger to reproduce some of the Mayan elements present in the codex, that had not yet been discovered in the 60’s.

So the Grolier Codex is authentic and “it has also the distinction of not only being the oldest of the four Mayan codexes discovered so far, but also the most ancient document of the ‘new world’”, says on an interview with BBC, the archeologist, Michael D. Coe, one of the authors of the research.

Researchers believe that the Grolier Codex was created by a scrivener at the time the big cities of the ancient civilization –such as Chichen Itza- were in decline.

This codex was returned to Mexico and is now held at the National Museum of Anthropology and History, as part of the ‘rare documents’ collection, which are preserved under strict conditions to preserve their temperature and humidity.
