Facing the programed budget cuts for 2017 of 63.8 percent on the Magic Towns or Pueblos Mágicos program, and as a way to obtain the necessary economic funds to save their lagoon, citizens from Bacalar are looking to get the recognition of Cultural and Natural World Heritage.
For such reason, have asked Limbano Gallegos Perez, director of the South-Southeast Regional Committee of the Mexican Commission of Cooperation with Unesco (Conalmex-Unesco), his counseling for this municipality of Quintana Roo to carry out the petition.
“(My visit to Bacalar) it is due to the invitation made some citizens to present its intention to integrate and seek the implementation and documentation, in order to become a World Heritage Site and the resources to achieve the rescue of the lagoon”.
On an exclusive interview for México News Network, Gallegos Perez stated that Bacalar, which is one of the 111 destinations considered as Magic Town by the Mexican government, “does deserve” to be designated as Cultural and Natural World Heritage.
He even underlined the urgency of this to take place, given that is has certain biological qualities –most of them in the “Lagoon of Seven Colors”, it’s main tourist attraction- which benefit the scientific area.
“(Bacalar has) the necessary elements to preserve and care for”, considered Gallegos Perez.
Also explained that the first requirement for a place to be named as World Heritage, it is necessary for the people to get organized, because there’s documentation to be completed.
“It’s not just a whim, the procedure has to be covered from the scientific and methodological areas in order to demonstrate that it has the necessary level to determine in first place if the application proceeds or doesn’t”.
The interviewee assured that if it gets considered Cultural and Natural World Heritage, Bacalar would obtain funds from Unesco, resources that would be managed by state and municipal authorities, given that is through this government structures that everything is managed and distributed accordingly.
“Bacalar is a place that offers many expectations and its people is organized and, especially there’s the urgency for this t walk on better conditions”, finalized Gallegos Perez.
