During his presentation at Forbes Forum 2017, Coparmex president Gustavo de Hoyos said that corruption and impunity will be the central issues to be addressed in next year´s presidential elections.
“I do not have any doubt that in 2018 the rule of law and, in particular, the fight against corruption will be the theme that will define the campaign from the presidency of the republic to the state congresses and governorships in dispute” , He said.
He said that a decisive step to end corruption towards 2018 is to investigate and punish the purchase of votes and the diversion of public resources to finance electoral campaigns.
He explained that along with corruption, impunity is one of the main problems that is slowing down the development of the country, so it is necessary to prosecute and investigate public servants who extort.
“We have become accustomed to the fact that the public denunciations and the newspaper reports give data, names and show evidence and yet nothing happens,” he said.
Last year, 561 out of every 10,000 companies in Mexico – micro, small, medium or large – reported being victims of an act of corruption when carrying out a process, according to data from the National Survey on Regulatory Quality and Government Impact on Business published by the Inegi.
For the president of Coparmex, a solution to combat corruption and impunity is to strengthen the rule of law through a strong anti-corruption prosecution and the release of legislative pending as the Law of Internal Security and the Single Command.
It also ruled that large cases of human rights violations by public servants are punished.
“Unfinished acts ranging from Ayotzinapa to government espionage to activists and journalists, and we have become accustomed to the fact that the authority does not investigate, as if nothing had happened, we have to demand that it be investigated.”
He also said that candidates in the race for the Presidency of the Republic must present their declaration 3de3, that is, the patrimonial, tax return and conflict of interest.
“And if you do not publish it, I’m sure, I have no doubt, that you will not win the election,” he said.
