Drinking fountains make a comeback to Mexico City

With an investment of about 12 million pesos, Mexico City Water System (Sacmex) has installed 230 water fountains in parks, gardens, schools and other public places. Part of the purpose of this is to fight obesity in children

Government hopes to reduce the consumption of sugary drinks, fight obesity and improve the health of citizens through free water consumption.

 

With an investment of about 12 million pesos, the Mexico City Water System (Sacmex) has installed 230 water fountains in parks, gardens, schools and other public places.

 

Part of the purpose of this is to fight obesity, especially in children. By the end of 2015, all primary schools will have school drinking fountains.

 

The director of Sacmex, Ramon Aguirre Diaz, told Mexican daily La Jornada, that 88 % of the water distributed throughout Mexico City’s Federal District meets the required parameters for consumption. He further explained that these drinking fountains will be the responsibility of each of the delegaciones (boroughs) to keep in hygienic conditions.

 

Alejandro Martinez, the head of operations of Sacmex, said that in determining the location of the drinking fountains a series of analyses of each of the 16 delegations took place.

“A child with no hydration is affected in his weight and size, dry skin or poor digestion, but also emotionally with tiredness, lack of concentration, irritability and even depression,” Dr. Gabriela Medina, a surgeon from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), told PR News Wire. “Therefore, parents should pay attention to hydration of children, as many diseases could be avoided if children take only 3 glasses of water a day.”

 

With this initiative, it is hoped that people consume more water and less sugary drinks. 85% of our bodies consist of water, which is indispensable for its development and brain function.
