The city of Ensenada in the state of Baja California was recently welcomed on the Creative Cities Network by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which designates cities “that have identified creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban development”, as stated on UNESCO’s website.
Ensenada, has gained its designation on the field of gastronomy, for its major development in the wine industry, as the city is known as the largest viniculture region in Mexico which has influenced not only the production of wine, but has encouraged the culinary scene to embrace a way of making food in harmony with nature.
Gastronomy in Ensenada is a factor that joins important activities and aspects of the region; it is not only a place for wine making, but also for fishing, tourism and agriculture; features that granted the city the inclusion in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN).
In Ensenada many things revolve around wine, the main gastronomic element that assured the city’s designation, there are over 65 wine houses, the Wine Route tours, hotels and restaurants that have wine as its main feature, gastronomic festivals, and so on.
Currently there are 116 cities on the UCCN from seven creative fields (Crafts and Folk Art, Design, Film, Gastronomy, Literature, Media Arts and Music); in the latest designation 47 cities from 33 countries where added, including three Mexican cities: Ensenada, Baja California for Gastronomy; Puebla, Puebla for Design; and San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas for Crafts and Folk Art.
Since its creation in 2004, this is the first time that Mexican cities are included in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.
