Mexico and United States should aim for a good relationship

President Enrique Peña Nieto has again rejected Donald Trump’s demand that Mexico pay for a wall along the border, but he vowed to seek good relations with the US president-elect.

Hours after Trump repeated his rhetoric against Mexico during a press conference, Peña Nieto said his government will seek “open and complete negotiations” with the next US government.

Everything that defines our bilateral relations is on the table, including security, migration and trade,” “Basic principles such as our sovereignty, national interests and the protection of the nationals are not negotiable,” he emphasized during the meeting held in the Treasury Hall of the National Palace.

It is obvious that we have some differences with the next government of the United States, like the issue of the wall that Mexico of course will not pay for,” Peña Nieto said as diplomats applauded.

He also referred to the increase in investments in infrastructure and technology to make the borders more modern, safe and efficient; as well as the free flow of remittances from Mexicans in the United States, in the order of $24 billion dollars, on which the livelihoods of thousands of families depend.

Turning to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which Trump wants to renegotiate, Peña Nieto said that Mexico will seek an agreement that gives “certainty” to investments.

Peña Nieto also issued his own demands to the incoming administration, which takes office on January 20.

He said that they must work in a co-responsible way to curb the trafficking of weapons and resources from the United States to criminal organizations in Mexico, as well as the protection of compatriots in the American Union.

Peña Nieto also said the United States needs to block the flow of money from illegal proceeds that fund organized crime.
