Due to the high demand of flights between Portuguese cities and Cancun – especially between April and September – Spanish airlines Evelop and Iberia have set up a new weekly flight route from Lisbon to this corner of Mexico. According to the CancunConventions and Visitors Center (OVC), this new connection will strengthen its position within the European tourist market.

A report from the Mexican Integrated System for Migration Operations revealed that in 2014, 21,198 tourists from Portugal travelled to Mexico, of which 1,700 traveled to beach destinations. At the time, Lisboetas hoping to vacation in Cancun generally took flights departing from Madrid, either with direct connection or with a stopover through Mexico City. That aside, Portuguese connections had already existed from the Azores Islands to Cancun. Direct flights from Lisbon to Mexico appear to only have existed seasonally.

The two Spanish airlines decided to develop a partnership after seeing the potential opportunity in establishing a more direct route.

According to Jesús Almaguer, director of the OVC, the fact that travelers from Portugal don’t need a visa to enter Mexico will encourage tourism between both countries.

These new routes are the result of business meetings made during at the International Tourism Trade Fair, which took place Madrid, Spain that concluded on February 1.
