Despite uncertainty over NAFTA, Mexico will continue to grow

IMF economic adviser Maurice Obstfeld commented that “Anything, including the renegotiation of NAFTA, will have an effect on the supply chains and these could be upset, which represents a lot of risk.”

 

Obstfeld also pointed out that Mexico has certain structural problems and that it is not following the trend in the region of low inflation and that although it has made significant progress in its micro-management, more can be done.

Finally, it is expected that the country’s general inflation will close the year at 5.9 percent, due to the release of gasoline prices and the depreciation of the peso at the beginning of the year, but they anticipate that by 2018 the indicator will return to the target range of the Bank of Mexico which is between 2 and 4 percent.
