The amount of money that circulates in the world of football is incredible. So the large cash prize that the 2017 Confederations Cup champion will receive hardly comes as a surprise to anyone.

Just by securing a place in this tournament which is the precursor to next year´s World Cup, FIFA guarantees US$2 million to the eight participating teams. Compared to the last Confederations Cup held in Brazil the prize has increased by 5%.

Mexico qualified for its seventh Confederations Cup by virtue of winning the CONCACAF Cup in 2015. Mexico hosted and won the tournament in 1999.

The FIFA Confederations Cup is held every four years and is contested by the holders of each of the six (UEFA, CONMEBOL, CONCACAF, CAF, AFC, OFC) regional championships, along with the FIFA world cup holder and the host nation, to bring the number of teams up to eight.

Ticket prices for the opening group stage matches range from $500 to $1000 and for the final, tickets cost from $1250 to $5600.

And in terms of the top prizes, for the team that finishes in fourth place FIFA will award US$3 million. The third placed team will receive US$3.5 million, the runner-up US$ 4.5 million and the champion will scoop a record US$5 million.

The format of the tournament is simple. 8 qualified teams are drawn into two round-robin groups. Every team plays all other teams in their group once, for a total three matches. Two teams from each group will advance to the quarter finals.

Mexico played a thrilling opening encounter against reigning European Champions Portugal which resulted in a 2-2 draw.  They next play New Zealand on Wednesday and their final group game will be against tournament hosts Russia on Saturday 24th June.

No matter whoever wins, Brazil will continue to be the top winner of the tournament for having won four times: 1997, 2005, 2009 and 2013.
