Trump is running out of options to deal with north korea

The latest test of a ballistic missile made by Pyongyang marks a moment for the US to step back and rethink its strategy, analysts say.

On Tuesday, America´s Independence Day North Korea announced on state television that it had successfully tested an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) for the first time, something that has long been seen as a red line in the already strained Bilateral relations between the US and North Korea.

Adam Mount, senior researcher at the Center for American Progress, said US President Donald Trump has few good options to respond to North Korea.

A very difficult question would be if Donald Trump feels like he’s being cornered and has no different options to war, Mount said.

In the past, North Korea has threatened on several occasions to attack the United States with nuclear weapons and the regime says it has the technical capacity to do so.

Euan Graham, director of the International Security Program at the Lowy Institute in Sydney, described development as a failure of US foreign policy, dating back to President Bill Clinton’s administration.

“It is a failure that goes beyond any government (of the United States),” he said. “An ICBM actually carries the North Korean threat right down to the United States floor … That is the dangerous dynamics that will be a driver for the United States response.”

Trump in January: “It will not happen”

For months, there have been indications that an intercontinental missile test by North Korea was imminent. In January, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un announced that his country’s missile program continued to grow rapidly.

President-elect Donald Trump responded on Twitter by saying that North Korea would not be allowed to create nuclear weapons with the ability to reach the United States.

In April, during the celebration of North Korea’s Sun Day, a missile was displayed throughout the capital, Pyongyang. Analysts said it could be a type of ICBM.

Learning to live with a North Korea Armada?

Experts say there are no good options for the Trump government to deal with a heavily armed North Korea.

“You can not try to stop North Korea by crossing a threshold that has already been crossed. What are the sanctions for? What do we gain by pushing China or North Korea? I think we have to take a step back and rethink, “said Mount.
