Dr. Vagón, the health train that brings free medical attention

An incredible way of helping

In Mexico, unfortunately many communities are left out of the health system, which leaves them quite unprotected and at risk, for such reason Fundación Grupo Mexico with the support of Ferromex developed a train that brings medical attention to those far away communities that have it pretty difficult to access health services.

The Health Train, named as Dr. Vagón or Dr. Wagon, is a former passenger train that has been transformed and equipped to transport physicians and equipment for different medical fields to distant communities in approximately 22 of the states in Mexico, as unluckily not all the country is connected with railways.

Dr. Vagón is a mobile clinic with 11 wagons equipped and transformed as medical offices, laboratory, specialty rooms, pharmacy, dormitories, and dining room. In the train, the medical staff comprised of approximately 30 people, who are trained and fully capacitated to receive in average 250 patients a day for free. Besides the technical staff who care for the train and needs of the medical staff.

The services that are available in the Health Train include preventive care, dental care, ultrasound, lab tests such as glucose, cholesterol, pregnancy tests and heart monitoring. Besides there is a wagon that is a pharmacy, and the patients receive free supply to begin their treatments.

It is an initiative that took three years to develop and inaugurated its routes in 2014; in fact this is the only Health Train in the American continent. The train travels during an average 15 days through three different communities in one state, and stays for 4 days approximately in each community.

The patients are given a card and an online record is created, for them to make online consultation and stay monitored. Since it initiated operations, and until September 2015, they have registered close to 40,000 patients who have been attended. The last route is currently in Chihuahua and will be finishing by mid-December.

Dr. Vagón is an amazing help to those people who require medical attention and have it impossible or nearly impossible to reach, as they live in marginalized and far away communities. It would be amazing that there would be more initiatives as such that could even more people.
