Blood Moon over Cancun

A lunar eclipse that turned the red to an intense and deep red!

The first of a series of lunar eclipses that takes place every six months occurred on April 15th 2014! This natural phenomenon was able to be admired from several regions in the south of the American continent, and according to data from the NASA, it’s a natural performance that will only repeat itself seven times in the entire century!

Cancun was one of the lucky cities of the world that had the opportunity of admiring such fascinating natural phenomenon, but let me tell you a little bit more about lunar eclipses.

LunaEclipse

The word eclipse derives from the Latin term eclipsis, meaning disappearance, and is directly applied to the transitory or partial hiding of a star.

It occurs when a celestial body is completely blocked by another one, due to its alignment. The most popular phenomenon of the sort are sun and lunar eclipses, nonetheless scientists reveal that these natural performances also go beyond the Earth-Moon-Sun relation and bond.

Eclipse Lunar

When the moon comes between the sun and the Earth, (the sun seems to be darkened) and causes a solar eclipse. Depending on the percentage that’s hidden by the Earth’s cone of shadow, one can define whether it’s a total, partial or ring eclipse. In the case of a complete disappearance of the moon, the Earth is the one that comes between the sun and the moon.

These natural phenomenons can be foretold with previous calculations on the Earth’s orbits and the moon’s; moreover it’s worth mentioning that eclipses tend to be cyclic, which eases its foretelling.

In some occasions during lunar eclipses, this natural satellite turns red, which is a strange and unique happening, also known as blood moon. Back in the olden days, civilizations would state that this phenomenon was negative; today we know it happens since the moon enters the center area of the Earth’s shadow (which is at the same a deep red color). This tone is caused by the sunlight that coordinates itself once it traverses the Earth’s atmosphere, something similar to the color it takes during dawns.

This is a very unusual natural phenomenon… The last registers of something of the sort, with a series of 4 lunar eclipses happened in 2004 and 2003. The astronomical event started at 3:06 am on April 15th and finished at 4:24 am, lasting a total of 78 minutes.
