Cultural Corridor Chapultepec: an innovative solution
A team of Mexican architects led by Fernando Romero, one of the men behind the future Mexico City Airport, through his architecture studio FR-EE, together with FRENTE and RVDG have set the goal of transforming one of the city’s most problematic avenues: Avenida Chapultepec, an important connective artery, and a keeper of historical heritage.
The project is named Corredor Cultural Chapultepec, which translates as “Cultural Corridor Chapultepec” and has the objective of providing pedestrians and cyclists with more space. In fact, the idea is to completely shift the concept of leaving more space for cars than pedestrians. This doesn’t mean there won’t be vehicle lanes. It just means there will be more space for social and cultural interaction, without affecting the traffic and vice versa.
Cultural Corridor Chapultepec seeks to rearrange mobility in this area of the city, as well as reconnecting the districts that converge onto this avenue. The whole idea is to build a raised landscape that includes green areas, shops, cultural spaces, wider sidewalks and bicycle lanes. At the bottom level there should be an ideal amount of space for public transport and private vehicles.

“This project will organize the surroundings, will double the green areas, will enhance connectivity and will celebrate the cultural diversity of the city,” stated Romero during an interview with architecture and design magazine, Dezeen.
The cultural aspect of the project is probably the most attractive and different feature of this corridor, it is designed to have specific areas for art, history and cultural expressions. For example, it will feature a theater-like space for outdoor screenings where people can gather to watch movies and films.
Cultural Corridor Chapultepec will ease the crosswalk and organize the traffic flow. This project will be funded 100% by the private sector, representing a no-cost benefit for the people. The city government will not use the people’s taxes.
The best part is that it is accessible for everyone. It will provide six times more space for pedestrians than it does now. It will also feature cost free activities for the whole family, free internet, and a secure, clean environment.
