At the service of over 15 thousand patients

There are 36.9 million people living with HIV in the world. Only in Mexico City 37 thousands have been registered as patients with HIV, and it’s of great importance to treat those patients as a way of improving their quality of life, as well as preventing society of such disease. For this reason the second HIV specialty clinic, “Dr. Jaime Sepúlveda Amor” was inaugurated in Mexico City.

The Jaime Sepulveda Amor HIV Specialized Clinic was opened up to give the grand metropolis a breather in such matter, as 37 thousand registered patients are living with HIV in the city, and the one clinic available for treatment of this disease couldn’t not even get close to providing such services, as it’s full maximum capacity operates with 9 thousand patients yearly.

This new clinic is fully equipped and ready to receive as many as 20 thousand people a year; it’s a three-story building, with 15 medical specialties, a Center for Transgender Health, and a research center, as well as other services.

Opening up this clinic is of great importance and is part of the government’s commitment to eradicate the HIV epidemic, which is important to note that in the last 15 years the number of new HIV infections has decreased by 35%. This is part of the efforts of prevention that were established since the 80’s, in which Dr. Jaime Sepúlveda Amor played a key role.

Dr. Sepúlveda Amor is the founder of the National Council of AIDS prevention (CONASIDA), anorganization that started out with prevention campaigns and encouraging the use of condoms. Hehas been an important character in keeping Mexico with “one of the lowest HIV prevalence in theWestern hemisphere”, said Dr. Sepúlveda, quoted on an article of the UCSF.

He also mentioned that there is a great opportunity to eliminate the HIV epidemic by the year 2030, and to achieve such this it is important to take preventive measures, as said by Mercedes Juan López, president of the Mexican Secretariat of Health, “Prevention is given through the education of young people in order to reach eradication.”, quoted on an article from Excelsior.
