Mexico is a country where history, culture, nature and talent are limitless. Today we are presenting the talented people that transformed the country during 2014. These characters have excelled in their fields and played a crucial role in positioning Mexico as a world leading country.
12.-René Drucker Colín
Prominent scientist, head of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of Mexico City (SECITI) and great influence in the constitution of this organization. Dr. Drucker as Minister of the SECITI, has supported several environmental projects, such as the recent agreement to produce biogas from nopal (edible cacti) residues in district Milpa Alta, Mexico City. Additionally, Dr. Drucker and his team recently won the Fundamental Research, Clinical and Technological award given by the National Chamber of Pharmaceutical Industry.
11.- Moisés Carreón
Young scientist who designed porous crystals that capture carbon dioxide –main air pollutant and cause of greenhouse effect- and “recycle” the gas and transform it into fuel or plastic. This achievement granted him the honor of receiving the Early-career Achievement in Science and Engineering, bestowed by the US government; as well as the Innovator Award from the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers.
10.-Miguel “El Piojo” Herrera
He is a former soccer player and current manager of Mexico´s National soccer team. In 2014 he stood out in leading the national team on to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil; qualifying against all odds and defeating the teams of Croatia and Cameroon in the 1st stage of the competition.
09.-Alejandro Soberón Kuri
Founder and CEO of Grupo CIE (Interamerican Entertainment Corporation), a company that operates several entertainment venues such as auditoriums and theme parks in Latin America, promoting a wide variety of events, fairs and exhibitions. In 2014 Grupo CIE alongside the Ministry of Tourism and the Tourism Promotion Fund, have brought back to Mexico Formula 1 Circuit: the Grand Prix of Mexico.
A recognized journalist and important opinion leader in Mexico; with over 25 years of experience, Aristegui has openly spoken about social and political issues that no one would dare to speak of. Thanks to it, 2014 has been an important year for her, since turned into a leader regarding freedom of expression.
Brilliant writer, activist and journalist, who has portrayed with her letters, tough events that penetrated the lives of a silenced society. Her work has reached many readers across the globe and granted her many recognitions and awards. In 2014 she received the Premio de Literatura en Lengua Castellana Miguel de Cervantes (Miguel de Cervantes Prize), she was also granted the Jose Emilio Pacheco Medal and the Fine Arts Medal.
Award-winning and proud Mexican singer and songwriter, she is an icon in the music industry. Adapting Mexican traditional and popular music, as well as incorporating indigenous languages, creating her own style. Her musical innovation has granted her a GRAMMY Award as well as three Latin GRAMMY Awards. This year she earned the award for Best Folk Album Raíz, recorded in collaboration with Niña Pastora and Soledad.
He is one of Mexico’s greatest singer, composer and artist; for over 25 years he has touched souls throughout USA, Latin America and the rest of the world. This year 2014 was the year of his triumphal comeback on to the musical scene. After recovering from a health condition, the Divo de Juarez is ready to take the stage in several cities around the world.
04.- Emilio Azcárraga
He is the Chariman of Televisa, the number one media company in the country and leader in Spanish language audiovisual content in the world. A mogul in the telecommunications industry, who launched in 2014 a new commercial offer: Izzi, a service provider of the Triple play: pay TV, high-speed internet and unlimited phone calls.
03.- Emmanuel Lubezki
Award-winning cinematographer, producer and director who has worked with both Cuarón and González Iñárritu; he is best known for his work on Sleepy Hollow, Children of Men and most recently in Gravity, which got him the Academy Award for Best Achievement in Cinematography in 2014.
02.-Alejandro González Iñárritu
Director, producer and writer who has left his mark in the film industry, with projects such as Amores Perros, Babel, Biutiful and for this year, Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), that was just nominated for the upcoming Golden Globes including Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy and Best Director - Motion Picture.
A film director, screenwriter and producer, better known for films like: Great Expectations, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Gravity. This last film awarded him in 2014, two Academy Awards for Best Achievement in Directing and Best Achievement in Film Editing (in addition to the other 5 Oscars the movie achieved); becoming the first Hispanic and Mexican to receive the Academy Award for Best Director.
