Mexico receives 'Tourism Excellence Award'

Mexico has been awarded the Tourism Excellence Award 2017 by Spanish corporate, Grupo Excelencias at the Tourism Trade Summit in Acapulco.

Upon delivering the award, José Carlos de Santiago, President of Excelencias Group, said that Mexico was selected due to the professionalization of the Mexican tourist sector that has translated into world class companies and tourism products.

This is the first time that the coveted prize has been awarded outside of Spain.

The 'Excellence Award' was received by the undersecretary of Innovation and Tourism Development, Gerardo Corona González, on behalf of President Enrique Peña Nieto during the Tianguis Turístico de México activities that took place in Acapulco this week.

Corona González said that over the past 6 years the current administration has worked to strengthen fundamental aspects of Mexico's tourism industry such as promotion, connectivity, financing, investment and urban planning. “This work resulted in more than 35 million international visitors last year," he said.

The federal official said that Mexico could climb to eighth place in the world ranking this year in terms of the country with the largest number of tourist visitors, with revenues in the order of $19 billion dollars.

Mexico features 187 archaeological sites, 11 thousand kilometres of coastline and has the second highest number of ecosystems in the world (10 percent of all known species live in Mexico, representing 2 percent of the planet's entire surface).

In addition, there are 181 protected natural areas, 34 World Heritage Sites (the first in Latin America, the seventh in the world), eight Intangible Heritage properties (such as gastronomy), 68 languages ​​with 364 linguistic variants and 111 Magical Towns.
