Seeking to support Mexican producers.
The Mexican company Sanborns, announced a few days ago, that they will start promoting agricultural products and beverages with "Designation of origin".
The group's director, Patrick Slim Domit, said the Sanborns restaurants will offer 12 dishes made with 7 agricultural products, as well as three of the five drinks produced in Mexico that have this designation.
Currently, Mexico has 14 designations of origin: Tequila, Mezcal, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Talavera, Varnishes of Olinalá, Amber from Chiapas, Chiapas coffee, Veracruz coffee, Ataulfo Mango, Vanilla of Papantla, habanero Chile fromYucatan and Rice from Morelos.
Now, the restaurant chain will have these products backed by law, ensuring the quality of their products and encouraging the consumption of food and beverages created in Mexico.

With this new acquisition Sanborns aims to support communities that manufacture these products, and to publicize the products among its customers, in order to support the economy.
According to the PROFECO, Article 156 of the Industrial Property Law stipulates that: "designation of origin is understood as the name of a geographical region of the country, which serves to designate a product originative from that land, and whose quality or special feature is due exclusively to the geographical environment, comprising in this, natural and human factors", and aims to prevent unfair competition through imitation, counterfeit or adulterations.
Presently, the products that are protected under the Designation of Origin employ more than 250,000 families, who are part of the economy of various states of the republic, which implies that this project is definitely an important factor for the economic development of the nation.
The legal protection of the Designation of Origin certainly benefits both producers and consumers, because on one hand it facilitates the producer to access to national and international markets, and on the other hand, the customer requesting them knows that they are not getting a copy or a forgery, but that they are consuming the original product.
Mexico currently has 14 designations of origin, while countries like Switzerland have more than 700, United States with more than 900 and the European Union has more than 6,000.
According to the vice president of the Association of Products with Designation of Origin, Carlos Azuara, “Mexico is extremely rich in natural resources and each state of the Republic could easily request the certificate for at least five products; the only thing the producers need to do, is organize.”
