Spring Equinox 2014!

The National Institute of Anthropology and History will introduce a special Spring Exquinox 2014 safety brigade

The spring equinox is the natural phenomenon indicating the seasonal change, from winter to spring. This astronomic event occurs when the Earth’s poles are evenly located in reference to the sun, giving as a result that both day and night last exactly 12 hours each.

Ancient civilizations took this phenomenon into account as a reference point for agriculture and for the development of fertility and spring related celebrations.

Thousands of people visit these ancestral sites to presence the seasonal change, due to the beliefs that the equinox provides positive energy and enlightenment to every spectator of this natural phenomenon.

Equinoccio 2014

The Astronomy Institute of the Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) noted that this year’s equinox will be registered on March 20th at 10:57 a.m., even though most of the people will visit archaeological ruins on the 21st, like it is usually done each year.

The National Institute of Anthropology and History will introduce a “Spring Equinox” safety brigade in 45 pre-Hispanic archeological sites from the 21st to the 23rd of March, particularly in the most popular sites like Chichen Itza. This brigade has the objective of protecting visitors of archeological sites such as Teotihuacan, El Tajín, Edzná, Cholula, Monte Albán, Xochicalco and El Tepozteco as well as the protection of these monuments.

Some recommendations include: respect off limits zones, no climbing the buildings, walls and archeological remains; no smoking inside these sites, follow traffic indications, and of course follow personnel indications and instructions.

Some of these sites have modified their regular schedule to allow the entry of a larger number of visitors.

Spring Equinox 2014

Chichen Itza: it will open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. but it will start asking visitors to leave at 5 p.m. as well as making entry cut every 3 hours to promote the flow of visitors.

Xochicalco y el Tepozteco: these keep regular visiting hours but they will make climb and descent cuts every 15 minutes.

Cholula: it will run from the 21st to the 23rd of March in visiting hours, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors will only be able to ascend the F building; there will also be access cuts for the site’s Museum. The night show “Quetzalcóatl Ritual” will take place in the city hall of San Andres Cholula at 7:30 p.m.

Teotihuacan: this site will keep its regular visiting hours, although access will be determined by day and time. By 4 p.m. the Sun Pyramid won’t be able to be climbed anymore and by 5:15 visitors must start their way out. On March 21st there will be ceremonies authorized by the National Coordination of Legal Affairs of the INAH; likewise the site has informed that Quetzalcóatl Temple, the Superpuestos set, Zacuala, Yayahuala, the Center of Teotihuacan Studies and the main foundations of the Sun and Moon squares will remain closed.
