Meet the magical town of Pahuatlán!

Come and discover Puebla’s little secret

Mexico’s rich with lots of incredible little towns full of the nicest people you’ll ever meet, the best flavors you’ll ever taste, and the greatest culture you’ll ever stumble upon;Pahuatlán is no exception! Just three hours away from the capital city of Puebla you can live the experience of this 7,000 people town with their natural scenarios, rivers and lookouts.

The place is heavily influenced by the Náhuatl and Otomí culture, with a mild touch of the Totonaca’s ethnicity too, making it a perfect place for scholar-type tourists to visit and learn about their history.

If you’re ever around, stay for at least a whole weekend, says the director of tourism Francisco Castillo; that’s the minimum amount of time it’ll take to appreciate the main attractions such as the art galleries, workshops, the artisan center and on Sundays, the tianguis –a colloquial name for flea market- opens up gathering the best of fresh fruits, artisans and local gastronomy.

An average day spending varies between 800-850 pesos, including food, drinks, transport, activities and souvenirs. Spending the night could range from 500 to a thousand pesos, depending on the hotel you’re visiting.

You can enjoy a lot of things in Pahuatlán, like trying their famous traditional signature beverage Acachul, a fermented berry based drink with a complicated process which involves berries in barrels, their “flying dancers” routine which was a classic in ancient cultures; dancers tethered at the top of a pole in four different directions representing north, east, west and south

And finally you could try their famous Salsa de Chicales, a sauce made out of garlic, onions, red tomato, chili peppers and –here’s the real kicker- a type of fire ant called Chicales! Hence the name, and then they put everything on a bowl and smash them to get the saucy texture and pour it over some red meat.

Don’t tell me I haven’t given you enough reasons to go there! Once you’re done visiting the Caribbean beaches at Riviera Maya and Cancun, this should be the kind of places you should be striving for, Mexico is like a giant box of chocolates and you don’t know what you may get, maybe just great surprises to truly enjoy your vacations.
