Travel bucket list: unique experiences in Yucatan Peninsula

One of the travel trends for 2016

Many people go through life gathering photos, websites, Pinterest boards, following travel accounts on Facebook and Instagram, maybe also collect travel guides, maps and everything travel related… And then don’t fulfill those lifetime dreams of going to Cancun, visiting Chichén Itzá or swimming in the Caribbean Sea.

This year should be different as travel trends dictate 2016 is a year to accomplish those dreamt trips and activities; and if Mexican destinations are in your bucket list, well let me just tell you on some special things that can only be found in the Yucatan Peninsula:

Stay at the chic and eclectic beach destination that everyone talks about: Playa del Carmen

This destination is one popular place; it attracts thousands of visitors every day for its eclectic and vibrant personality. In here you’ll find numerous hotels, restaurants, shops, nightclubs, and bars; and that’s not even mentioning the gorgeous beaches.

Visit one of the New 7 Wonders of the World: Chichén Itzá

A pre-Hispanic city of the Maya civilization nestled in the jungle, right in the state of Yucatan. It is a magnificent vestige of the greatness that the Maya left as inheritance. Besides it is also one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, and only one in North America.

Dive in a sacred Maya deep water sinkhole : Cenote

Cenotes are these unique deep water formations that only exist as such in the Yucatan Peninsula. The Mayas though that these natural pools were the entrance to the underworld. Besides those beliefs, they are spaces where to freshen up from the warm weather.

Walk around an old Maya city in front of the sea: Tulum

Ancient Maya fortress that offers a one-of-a-kind scenario, it is a magnificent work of architecture placed at the top of a cliff overlooking the Mexican Caribbean. The best thing to do is to tour the ruins and then take a stroll down the beach and dive in the ocean.

Swim and meet fascinating sea turtles in a marine refuge: Akumal

Akumal is a natural wonder where sandy white beaches join calm turquoise waters, which receive every year numerous turtles to lay their eggs. So this is a place where to swim with turtles in their natural habitat. Also, this destination recently becameShelter for the Protection of Marine Species in the Mexican Caribbean.
